We recently had a chance to meet the founder and learn her background and insights. Below, she shares the 411 on why she made the non-toxin change, her ingredients, and whats ahead for Naturally Betsy.
Why did you decide to go into business and create Naturally Betsy?
Naturally Betsy is a line of all natural products that I created when my first grandchild was born. Around this time I really began to notice the quantity of chemicals in my everyday beauty and household products, and rather than grumble about it, I decided to take action. I planted my own gardens, raised my own chickens, canned my own food, and made my own skin care and home care products. Everyone thought I was crazy, but my natural lifestyle was working out great! I started telling everyone about it, and soon they began asking if they could buy my products. That’s when I knew I had something special. So I created Naturally Betsy.
Please share your background in beauty.
When I attended cosmetology school, I fell in love with the beauty business. After I graduated, I got married, had three babies, and decided to stay at home and raise my family. But I never lost my love for the business. I’ve always stayed involved in some way or another, by cutting or coloring someone’s hair, or doing someone’s makeup for their wedding or their prom or even giving someone an eyebrow arch. It’s always been a passion.
Why is natural deodorant a better choice? Does it really work? How?
The reason it works so well is because the coconut oil has anti-microbial properties which kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria which can cause odor. The baking soda neutralizes any residual odor, and the cornstarch keeps you dry. The essential oils have healing, as well as antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties. And they smell delicious! Together these ingredients make for a perfect combination.
Be Fresh, my all natural deodorant works fantastically. Of all the natural deodorants I’ve sampled (and that’s at least ten), Be Fresh is the only one that actually worked for me.
Can you elaborate on what you’re putting into your products and what you’re leaving out? Why does this make your formulations so unique?
I only put all-natural, pure ingredients into my products. My goal is to use as many organic ingredients as possible. I feel the things you put on your body are as important as the things you put in your body.
I do not use any chemicals, dyes, preservatives, or synthetic fragrances in my products.
It’s very disturbing to me that most commercial skin care products contain phthalates and parabens which are totally unnecessary. Even chemicals like propylene glycol, which is used to keep products from melting or freezing, is a common ingredient, and we apply this directly to our skin! That’s just wrong. We need to start using common sense. My products contain no chemicals or additives, and it’s evident from the first time you use them.
What’s ahead for Naturally Betsy?
I have new products under development as we speak. I’m always looking for new ideas and suggestions. I recently had a request for a new, light weight body scrub for summer. After some research and testing, Summer Scrub was born. It’s a lightweight body scrub and it’s perfect for those summer days when you need something a little less oily, but something that still exfoliates and moisturizes.
And as always, we’re trying to expand our business by educating people about the dangers of chemicals and additives in the environment, as well as on our bodies.
